The Famine

The Famine

Featured in the September, 2007 Issue of the Ashburn Baptist News

God said there would be a “famine through the land, not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11).

We Americans are overweight physically and underweight spiritually. The words of the ancient prophet are being fulfilled before our eyes. Will American Christianity be doomed because we are trying to build the super-structure of a church without the foundation of Scripture? Jesus said that this building “on sand” (Matthew 7:26) will result in destruction.

Bible shortages in China resulted in believers memorizing not only chapters, but whole Bible books when a copy could be borrowed. In America, professing believers ignorant of Scripture are easily taken in by cults and preachers with strange versions of the Christian faith.

Ashburn Baptist offers a solid program of Bible Study.

Sunday, September 2 at the 9:45 am Adult Bible Classes, we begin a 12-year program of Scripture study that includes every Bible book. See the enclosed sheet for the entire 12-year schedule. This is not an experiment. We have already been through this program two times. Twenty-four years of study have proven the value of this carefully crafted approach to Scripture study.

People are often urged to seek out a “Bible teaching church”. However, there are hundreds and hundreds of such churches who while always giving out the Word of God neglect large portions of Scripture. Many Bible books are never preached from or studied in this so called “Bible teaching church”.

At Ashburn Baptist, we feel that all the Bible should be taught because “all Scripture is given by inspiration” (II Timothy 3:16).

Why are so many Christian marriages failing, and why are so many Christians in “counseling”? The Word of God has been neglected. There has been little serious Bible Study and shallow preaching deals only with human problems.

The Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study program offered at Ashburn Baptist covers the entire Bible. The 14 classes, which are marked by excellence, enroll over 400 students.

Warren W. Wiersbe, whose Bible study books have sold over four million copies, says of our Bible Study program, “It is excellent-balanced-a vast improvement on the other schedules I have used.”

Here is what people say about these Bible classes:

“The teacher comes to class well-prepared and allows time for class discussions.”

“The class is very friendly.”

“I have learned so much from this class in understanding the Word of God.”

“I enjoy the emphasis on real life application and the practicalness of what we are learning.”

“Our teacher is very well-read in God’s Word and has a gift for teaching.”
